What you'll learn
- Explain how DHCP works at a protocol level, including the DORA process, broadcast and unicast behavior, lease allocation, and client–server interactions.
- Configure and manage DHCP services on OPNsense, using both ISC DHCP and Kea DHCP, and select the appropriate service based on real-world use cases.
- Design and implement VLAN-based network segmentation on OPNsense, including VLAN creation, interface assignment, and proper integration with DHCP services.
- Bind DHCP services to VLAN interfaces and apply correct firewall rules, ensuring secure communication, proper routing, & controlled access between segments
- Troubleshoot common DHCP and VLAN issues, such as clients not receiving IP addresses, connectivity failures, ARP-related problems & routing misconfigurations
- Apply best practices for secure and scalable network design, suitable for enterprise environments, ISP networks, and lab or training deployments.
Requirements
- Basic networking knowledge is recommended, such as understanding IP addressing, subnetting, and fundamental TCP/IP concepts.
- Familiarity with network devices (routers, switches, or firewalls) is helpful but not mandatory.
- No prior OPNsense experience is required; the course starts from the basics and builds up step by step.
Description
It is designed for network engineers, system administrators, and IT professionals who want to build secure, scalable, and well-segmented networks using OPNsense in real-world environments.
Who this course is for:
- IT professionals responsible for deploying or managing firewalls and network infrastructure
- Network engineers who want to design segmented and secure networks using VLANs
- System administrators who need to configure and troubleshoot DHCP services in production environments
- IT practitioners building lab, enterprise, or ISP-style network environments
