Most of you, as network engineers, when you want to configure the Cisco IOS router you use the console cable and connect it to the console port of the router.

The console cable looks like this:

Amazon.com: Cisco Console Cable 9-pin DB9 Female Serial RS232 Port to RJ45 Male Cat5 Ethernet LAN Rollover Console Cable Switch Cable Cisco: Computers & AccessoriesThis cable will be connected from your PC to the Cisco Router (or switch) on its console port. The console port looks like this:

However, it is highly advised that you put a password on the console port otherwise anyone who can a console cable, a laptop, and he is close to the Cisco router, he can just connect to it via console and gain access to it.

For this reason, in this lesson I will show you how you can put a password on the console port so everytime someone connect to the console port he will be asked to put the password.

I am already connecting my PC to the Cisco Router via the console port and ask you can see I am able to login to it without being asked for a password.

Let's proceed by putting a password now to the console line on the Cisco Router.

R1#configure terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
R1(config)#line console 0
R1(config-line)#password 123456
R1(config-line)#login
R1(config-line)#

I have just put a simple password of "123456". Please don't use this password and use a strongest one when you want to put a password to the console of your router.

Let's try now if I connect again to the console then I will be asked to put the password.

R1 con0 is now available
Press RETURN to get started.

Here we go!!!! You see it is asking for to enter the password now. Great!!!!! Then now anyone who is getting access to the console port he should know the password otherwise he can't enter to the Cisco router.

Now I have put the password on the console port and I am inside the router. You will see that the password is invisible when you enter it on the Cisco router, that's normal so no one can see what password that you have entered in case someone is sitting behind your back and watching what you are doing :)

Excellent!!!! So this is the way to put a password on the console port on Cisco Router. If you have any question, please leave it in your comment below and I will get back to you ASAP.

See you in another lesson.
