In this lesson, i will show you how to limit all streaming videos for your users who are getting their internet service from the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter.
Let's imagine that you are an administrator of a network and you have seen that most of your bandwidth is being wasted in Streaming videos causing the other users to find slowness on the service. Your goal is not to stop the streaming videos but to provide it only 512 Kbps on upload and same on download. This can be accomplished using the QOS basic queue on the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter.
I will open a Dailymotion video and see how much bandwidth this is pulling from the EdgeRouter
From the EdgeRouter dashboard, I can see a huge consumption of bandwidth specially on the download which is peaking somewhere to 8 Mbps, and that's only 1 dailymotion video open. In case you have more videos open from different users, then the bandwidth will be even more.
Let's see now how we can limit that.
From the Dashboard, click on QOS which is the abberviation of Quality of Service,
From the QOS, you clck on Basic Queue and you fill the same as I have done on the picture above. Let me explain to you what I have done.
On the Source I have put 10.10.10.0/24 which is the range of my internal LAN. In you case, check what is your internal LAN address and put the network ID of it in the Source. In the destination I don't put anything because it is going to the internet, so I will leave it empty. On the application, I have chosen the Streaming-Media in which Dailymotion but also many other streaming website are included and categorized under the Streaming-Media category. Then on Rate I have put 512K which means 512Kbps - that's for the upload. and the Queue type I have chosen PFIFO (I will speak about the difference between the Queue types in a different lesson). For the Reverse rate, which is the download traffic, I have put the same as for the upload. Don't forget to click on Apply once you are done.
I will open now 2 Dailymotion videos and see if I find any difference with the traffic.
As you can see, when checking on the traffic analysis you will see that the RX Rate (download) is exactly on the 0.5 Mbps that I have assigned it. Excellent - so this way you can limit the bandwidth of the streaming videos in your network.
For curiosity, if you want to know what applications comes inside the Streaming-Media category, here you can write the following command from the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter CLI:
[email protected]:~$ sudo /usr/sbin/ubnt-dpi-util show-cat-apps Streaming-Media Applications in category [Streaming-Media] ======================== 17 56.com 6.cn adnstream afreecatv airplay amazon-prime-music amazon-video apple-music arirang asf audible avi babelgum baidumusic baofeng baomihua barks bbc-iplayer blip.tv break.com channel-4 channel-5 china-streaming-video cinemanow/filmon cjb.co.kr cntv crackle cradio crunchyroll daap dailymotion deezer directv doubanfm douyutv empflix eskimotube filmin flixster flixwagon flv fora.tv freecast freeones.com funshion grooveshark guagua gyao hbo-now hbogo headweb hichannel hulkshare hulu hustlertube ifeng-video- imbc imdb.com imgo-tv iqiyi/pps itunes itunes-festival itv joy.cn kaltura.com kbs kctvjeju keyholetv kideos kids.gov kkbox kodi ku6 kugou lastfm letv live365 livejasmin.com livesearch.tv/coolstreaming livestation livestream lovefilm m1905 m4v madbitties majorleaguegaming maxdome mbn metacafe mgoon miaopai microsoft-silverlight miro mixbit mlb.com mlssoccer mms/wmsp mov movenetworks mp3 mp4 mtv.com musicsoda mwave mysolive national-geographic-kids netflix newbigtube nhl niconico nubeox ooyala pandora pbs-kids pbs-video periscope photobucket pipi plex.tv podcast porn.com pornhub.com pptv-(pplive) qello qqlive quicktime qvod/bobohu realplayer redtube.com rhapsody rmvb roku rtl.nl rtmp rtp rtsp sbs shazam shoutcast sina-video siriusxm smithsonian-channel sohu-tv sopcast spotify streamate.com swf ted thunderkankan tnaflix trailers tube8 tudou tudouva tunein twitch.tv uitzendinggemist unifi-video-camera ustream.tv uusee v.163.com veetle veohtv vevo viaplay videodetective vimeo vlc voddler vube vudu vyclone watchever weather-channel web-streaming winamp windows-media-player wma wmv wowtv.co.kr wsj-live wuaki.tv xhamster.com xnxx.com xtube xvideos.com yahoo-video yinyuetai yobt.tv youjizz youku.com youkuva youporn.com youtube ytn [email protected]:~$
Streaming video applications can be heavy on our internet connection and will affect negatively the service performance. That's why it is always advisable to limit its bandwidth as much as possible.
